Our Vision for the Future
We envision a world in which all individuals and families have safe, decent affordable and accessible housing, plus the other necessities of life in an environment which honors diversity, promotes education and self-esteem and encourages mutual respect.
How You Can Help
There are many ways to support the mission of the Women's Resource Center.
Service Opportunities
If you are part of a church, school or service organization that is looking for a service opportunity, we may have just the ticket! Call us and we'll put together an event that supports your mission and ours!
Food Donation
We provide a food pantry for folks entering our programs who may arrive with little or nothing. Non-perishable food donations are always welcome. If you have perishable fresh food, call ahead so we can accept it and plan to use it up before it expires.
Hygiene Products
With so many families residing at the Bruce, we are also always in need of hygiene products like disposable diapers, soaps and shampoos, disposable razors, menstrual products, even laundry and dish soap.
Time
If you are unable to donate any of the previous items listed, your time is always welcome. We are in need of great volunteers. You can work in many capacities from helping us to keep the Bruce "spruced up," teaching a skill or craft, reading to our kiddos, serving a holiday meal, and more... use your imagination and give us a call!
Resources
Of course, we are always in need of monetary donations.
Did you know it costs between $20,000 and $45,000 per year to our community to leave a homeless person on the street, but it costs about $12,500 per year to provide them with supportive housing? The extra cost is due to excessive use of jails, police encounters and emergency room visits by homeless individuals. By supporting the Women's Resource Center and other Permanent Supportive Housing agencies, you reduce the tax burden to yourself and the rest of the community, free up emergency rooms and help a person address the root issues that caused their homelessness in the first place.
Although housing folks saves the community money, it is a financial burden to our agencies because it entails so much - from case management to facility maintenance. As we say at the Women's Resource Center, "It's housing first, not housing only!" To be great at doing good, we need a great organization, and that costs money.
If you have any other ideas for tangible or intangible donations, don't hesitate to call our office at 509-662-0121.
